Meet Our Founders

“Better Life Foundation was founded in 2009 with a strong belief that if indigenous communities are empowered and their livelihood security is ensured, many of the pressing challenges they face—such as youth unemployment, cultural erosion, and loss of biodiversity—can be effectively addressed. Our journey began amid numerous challenges, working with highly marginalized communities that had limited exposure and access to resources. We witnessed a growing trend of young people migrating to urban centres in search of low-paying jobs, often without any job or personal security. This deeply concerned us, as it signalled not only economic hardship but also a loss of identity and connection to the land.

From the beginning, our vision has been clear: to create a sustainable and inclusive development model that is community-owned and rooted in the village itself. We aim to institutionalize this process—where the people lead, manage, and sustain development initiatives themselves—building long-term resilience and pride in their heritage, environment, and collective future.”

Sethrichem Sangtam

Educated at the National Law School of India University, Sethrichem Sangtam was on track for a global legal career, having secured a U.S. H1B work visa. Instead, he made the deliberate choice to return to Nagaland to serve his community. In 2009, he founded Better Life Foundation to support sustainable rural livelihoods, education, and environmental conservation. Driven by his commitment to grassroots change, he has helped over 500 Self Help Groups and multiple Farmers’ Producer Cooperatives.
